Science
Science is at the core of the Montessori environment.
Science activities are combined with reading, writing, art, math and other subjects to enhance learning in those areas while introducing the children to fundamental concepts of science. The following are just samples of the science activities included in our curriculum.
The human circulatory, digestive, respiratory, nervous systems and other parts of the human body are studied. The child is also introduced to the function and structure of the human eye, nose, mouth, ear, teeth, skeleton and muscles. A beautiful "Botany cabinet" with small drawers containing many different types of leaves is an apparatus explored with much interest. The leaves are identified, described and colored.
The planets, outer space, comets, black holes, and constellation meteors are studied as are the inner earth and the geological classification of rocks, shells, minerals and gems.
Other topics include prehistoric animals, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds, insects, clouds, the weather, the environment, pollution, conservation, erosion, nutrition, hygiene and exercise. The children are encourages to research the above subjects working independently using reference books and computers located in the classroom.
The elementary program stands independently but also builds on concepts introduced at the preschool level. For example, while children learn the parts of a flower, plant or bird at the preschool level, at the elementary level they will explore each item in detail with the aid of Montessori prepared activities and through independent research.
Finally, at Open House in Springtime, the children participate in a science fair.
